According to Vivekananda, “Religion is based upon the experiences of ancient times, but also that no man can be religious until he has had the same experiences himself. Raja Yoga is the science which teaches us how to get these experiences.”

Dhyanyogi recommended this book because yoga is fundamental to the path of Kundalini Maha Yoga. more details in product description

Raja-Yoga is a system of yoga, ascribed to Patanjali, that provides techniques to strengthen contemplation, concentration, and meditation and that ultimately leads to samadhi. While sleeping in a meditative posture, Madhusudandas Dhyanyogiji suddenly experienced an electrifying vision of Vivekananda. A few days later, he came upon Raja-Yoga from which he received divine inspiration. While he had previously been unable to understand Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, after reading Vivekananda’s comments, everything became crystal clear. Dhyanyogi recommended this book because yoga is fundamental to the path of Kundalini Maha Yoga.*

Vivekananda declares, “When by analyzing his own mind, a man comes face to face, as it were, with something which is never destroyed, something which is by its own nature, eternally pure and perfect, he will no more be miserable, no more be unhappy. All misery comes from fear, from unsatisfied desires. When a man finds that he never dies, he will then have no more fear of death. When he knows that he is perfect, he will have no more vain desires. And both these causes being absent, there will be no misery; there will be perfect bliss, even in this body.”

The book opens with transcribed lectures delivered by Vivekananda followed by his free translation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras with commentary.  The book ends with an exploration of concentration, spiritual powers, the powers of the mind, reincarnation, and discipleship.

This revised edition is taken from Vivekananda: The Yogas and Other Works (1953) and includes new content in the form of additional lectures.  This text, along with Karma-Yoga and Bhakti-Yoga and Jnana-Yoga, makes a full set of this edition.

Paper bound 285 pages plus Glossary and Index.

* Kundalini Maha Yoga is the path to self-realization (enlightenment) through the awakening of the Kundalini Shakti, the divine energy that resides in all of us. Awakened it creates the conditions for spiritual progress and ultimately samadhi. The full potential of the body and mind may then be realized, inner peace attained, and the sublime truth of unity in diversity experienced—the fact that all life is one seamless fabric.
